The best disk space analyzers for Mac, compared

A disk space analyzer shows which folders are using your storage, so you stop guessing. They differ in how they show it, what they let you do about it, and what they cost. We make one of them, so we've kept to facts each maker publishes.

Which one to pick

  • You just want to see what’s big, for free: GrandPerspective (a treemap) or OmniDiskSweeper (a sorted list). Both are long-running and free. GrandPerspective, OmniDiskSweeper.
  • You want a polished map of any drive, and you’ll decide what to delete: DaisyDisk. See our DaisyDisk comparison.
  • You want the app to know what’s safe to clear, especially on a developer’s Mac (Xcode, node_modules, Docker, AI models): DiskApp. Scanning is free.
  • You also use Windows, or want duplicate finding: DiskBuddy. See our DiskBuddy comparison.
  • You want one app for cleanup, malware checks and app updates: CleanMyMac. See our CleanMyMac comparison.

What to look for in any of them

  • Real sizes. Good analyzers count what a folder actually takes on disk and don’t count hard-linked files twice.
  • The Trash, not instant deletion. Anything you clear should be recoverable until you empty the Trash.
  • Protected system areas. The app should refuse to touch macOS system folders, not just warn.
  • Honest “System Data”. Much of what macOS labels System Data is caches, snapshots and developer files. See what System Data is.

See where your space went

Scanning is free, with no account. DiskApp shows every folder by what it really holds and flags only what a rule can prove is safe to clear.
